Dubai Police issue 48,950 fines for expired vehicle registration
What happened
Dubai Police have issued 48,950 traffic fines in the past 10 months to motorists who drove vehicles with expired registration. January had the highest number of violations, at 6,977. May had the lowest, at 984.
The director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police warned that the problem is not only about fines. When a registration is not renewed, the vehicle often also misses its regular technical inspection. This is the check that looks for mechanical faults before they cause an accident.
According to Dubai Police, drivers who delay renewal may keep using a car without checking key parts, including:
- tyres
- brakes
- lighting
- steering systems
This increases the chance of a sudden breakdown on the road, which can lead to a traffic accident. The director also warned that if the vehicle insurance has also expired and the driver has an accident, the owner may face more financial and legal consequences.
What the law says
According to Dubai Police, under traffic regulations, driving a vehicle with expired registration carries:
- a fine of AED 500
- four traffic points on the driver's record
- seven days of vehicle impoundment (the police keep the car for that period)
Dubai Police also said that delayed renewals can lead to additional penalties and legal consequences. They did not give more detail on these in their announcement.
What this means for you
For most residents, vehicle registration is easy to forget, because it comes only once a year. But the cost of forgetting is more than a fine. Losing your car for seven days can affect your work and family life, and the traffic points stay on your record.
The bigger risk is safety. The technical inspection is linked to renewal, so a car with expired registration may not have been checked for worn brakes, bad tyres or faulty lights. Dubai Police stressed that these checks protect you, your passengers and other road users.
Insurance is the other concern. If your registration and your insurance expire together, and you are in an accident, you may have to deal with the costs and legal questions without insurance cover.
Dubai Police encouraged owners to check their registration and insurance expiry dates regularly, book technical inspections on time, and pay outstanding traffic fines quickly instead of letting them build up. They said smart services from Dubai Police and other authorities let motorists check and pay fines and renew registration online.
What to do:
- Pay traffic fines only through official police or government apps and websites, and do not let them build up before your renewal.
- Do not pay agents who promise to skip the technical inspection or other renewal procedures.
- If you are in an accident, stay at the scene and report it to the police.
- If you are not sure how this applies to you, ask a question before you act.
