What happened

Dubai Police have arrested a gang of six people accused of taking Dh2.6 million from one victim in a fake cryptocurrency deal. According to Dubai Police, the money was made up of Dh2 million in cash and Dh600,000 in cryptocurrency.

The police said the victim wanted to buy cryptocurrency with a large amount of cash. He went to an unlicensed exchange shop to complete the deal outside the official, approved channels. There he met several of the accused and agreed on the deal.

The victim transferred virtual assets (digital money such as cryptocurrency) to decentralised digital wallets. These wallets do not directly show who owns them. The accused then took the cash and ran away. According to the police, they believed it would be hard to find them because crypto moves quickly and is difficult to trace.

After the victim reported the case, teams from the General Department of Criminal Investigation worked on two tracks at the same time:

  • field work to identify and follow the people involved
  • technical analysis to trace how the crypto moved between digital wallets

The police said the accused were identified and arrested in record time. Experts also traced the stolen virtual assets and secured all of them before they could be moved to other wallets or used.

/ Your Risk

What this means for you

This case shows a common risk. When people try to complete a crypto deal quickly, in cash, and away from official channels, they can lose large sums. A shop or person without a licence gives you no protection if something goes wrong.

Dubai Police warned residents not to deal with unlicensed people or businesses that offer to buy or sell cryptocurrency. They said this is especially important when an offer promises big and fast profits. The police asked people to check that a provider of virtual asset services is legal before making any payment.

The police also said people should avoid cash crypto deals through unknown middlemen or unlicensed shops. Fraudsters use the wish of some customers to finish deals outside official channels.

The case also shows why speed matters. Dubai Police said that reporting suspicious activity quickly is very important. It helps the police trace and secure money and virtual assets before they disappear. The police said reports are handled in full confidence.

The six people are accused. A court has not ruled on the case.

/ Stay Safe

What to do:

  • Buy or sell cryptocurrency only through licensed providers, and check their licence before you pay.
  • Be careful with anyone who asks for cash, refuses bank transfers or asks to meet in private to take money.
  • Do not pay anyone who promises big, fast profits or a shortcut around official rules.
  • If you have already paid, keep every message, receipt and the names of witnesses, and report it to the police quickly.
  • Report suspicious offers or crimes to the police.
